LUTHER Full Movie part 2 of 2The Rev. The other is just the sheer drama of history that overtook Luther. It just sort of caught Germany at the moment when he was lighting a fuse in a firecracker and didn't know it.
Luther's faith has always been a popular subject for Western filmmakers. Germany created several contemporary television dramas on the reformer's life and even produced "Luther," a black-and-white silent movie in Till's movie opens with Luther as a young law student whose life abruptly changes when he's spared during a violent thunderstorm.
He subsequently joins the Augustinian order of monks, but despite frequent visits to the church confessional during which he really has nothing to confess , he admits, "I live in terror of judgment.
Then he was told he had to list all of his sins," said Peters, noting that although Luther would spend hours in the confessional, he never really felt God's grace until he realized God's profound love for human beings.
Instead of guilt and terror of God's presence, [Luther realized] God provides grace and forgiveness," Peters adds.
Luther ruffled many feathers during his lifetime. He publicly criticized the church in Rome for its sale of indulgences and referred to the pope as the anti-Christ.
When he refused to recant his "heretical" writings, Pope Leo X excommunicated him. Luther later married a nun and translated the Bible into German. One of Luther's more vulnerable—or problematic—traits was his attitude toward Judaism.
Although he initially preached tolerance toward the Jewish people, he later condemned Jews when they refused to convert to Christianity. Several Lutheran denominations have since apologized for and renounced Luther's anti-Semitism.
Although Till was well aware of these flaws, he does not dwell on them in the movie and the film ends earlier in Luther's career. It was just decided that the film should end where it does.
It was no deliberate attempt to disguise his warts. Now playing min. An ever greater number of peasants are unable to meet these obligations and forced into serfdom, making them completely dependent on their overlords and virtually without rights.
Complaints are rarely taken seriously, instead - draconian penalties and legal despotism. Added to the many social and economic problems come other concerns: the church organisation in the country is poor, likewise the provision of the holy sacraments and Communion.
Many fear for their salvation. This leads to repeated unrest in the Late Middle - without any lasting success.
With the onset of the Reformation, the peasants take heart. They believe Martin Luther and his new doctrine to be on their side.
They formulate their demands in pamphlets. Among other things, they demand the abolition of bondage, a lowering of services and taxes and the freedom to elect their own parish priests.
As an amicable settlement founders due to the uncompromising position of the landlords, rebellion breaks out, village by village.
Now he radically distances himself from the insurgents. Muentzer is parish priest in Thuringian Muehlhausen and stands for the violent liberation of the peasants.
His attempt to unite various Thuringian peasant troops, however, fails. In May , he is captured in the Battle of Frankenhausen and subsequently tortured and put to death.
With this revelation, he turns on the Church. He attacks its practice of selling Indulgences in his famous 95 Theses, putting himself on an irreversible path to conflict with the most powerful institution of the day.
The Catholic Church uses all of its might to try to silence Luther, including accusations of heresy and excommunication. Protected by his local ruler, Frederick the Wise, Luther continues to write radical critiques of the Church.
In the process, he develops a new system of faith that places the freedom of the individual believer above the rituals of the Church.
Aided by the newly invented printing press, his ideas spread rapidly. He is called before the German imperial parliament in the city of Worms and told he must recant.
Risking torture and execution, Luther refuses, proclaiming his inalienable right to believe what he wishes. His stand becomes a legend that inspires revolution across Europe, overturning the thousand-year old hegemony of the Church.
But as the reformation expands into a movement for social freedom, Luther finds himself overwhelmed by the pace of change, and is left vainly protesting that his followers should be concerning themselves with God.

Presented in a very fair and balanced way. Once I saw it at a friend's house, I knew I had to own a copy myself.
Contrary to popular myth; Martin Luther never meant to establish his own brand of Christianity Lutheranism. Rather he was conducting the Catholic mass etc and following doctrine in ways consistent with scripture with the intent of returning Catholicism to that original path.
It taught me a lot. All of the Empires series are great in that respect. You get pulled right into the time frame, so you feel you are observing from within that time.
The narrators are wonderful. Liam Neeson narrated the Martin Luther series. Sigorney Weaver narrated Rome in the First Century, which is the other set of episodes that I watched.
Well written, well produced story of the man, chosen by God to change the world. He relied upon God to stand for his conviction the God's word is for the common man, not just to be used by the catholic church as tool to fill the coffers of the bankrupt church.

In dieser dramatischen Situation trotzt der geächtete Luther den tödlichen Gefahren für sein Leben, verlässt sein Versteck und beschwört die Landesherren während eines geheimen Treffens, ihrem Glauben treu zu bleiben. It was just decided that the film should end where it does. It was no deliberate attempt to disguise his warts. Now playing min. In an opening sequence, Luther presents his principal query during a dialogue with his spiritual father in the Augustinian monastery where he lives.
Chafing against a traditional interpretation of a terrifying and judgmental God that traps persons in a life of fear and shame, Luther desperately seeks an answer to quell his own torment and that of his parishioners, those whom the Church exploits.
What sets this film apart is its drive to explore Luther's question without sacrificing either dramatic visual narrative or authentic theological exploration.
Many films on persons of faith tend either to appeal to an audience's lower theological denominator or become a preachy, teaching tool.
This film navigates the twin thread of historical drama and thoughtful theological inquiry quite successfully.
Joseph Fiennes "Shakespeare in Love," "Enemy at the Gates" portrays Luther in a serious, passionate and driving style, sometimes too serious.
Were it not for the performances around him, such as that of the brilliant Peter Ustinov who lends humor and compassion, Fiennes might have been lost in a too-stodgy and confining role.
But he is surrounded throughout the film by a trinity of father figures and a host of minor ones who echo Luther's struggle to find a merciful God.
The film also explores how new thought can quickly descend into orthodoxy. While Luther is in exile to protect him from the far reaches of the Pope, his new Protestant followers begin a reign of terror against Catholics, which horrifies Luther and prompts his burning question to be restated.
Why would God bring about suffering when Luther's mission is to restore the church's fidelity to truth? Luther's dramatic appearance before the Diet of Worms in is the high point of the film.
When asked to recant his "95 Theses" and other writings, Luther—in a contrastingly quiet and peaceful tone to that of his earlier ranting—says that unless he can be convinced by scripture that he has been unfaithful, he will not recant.
From that dramatic point, however, the film's second half descends into a less effective sequence that includes Luther's exile, return and introduction of a German translation of the Bible.
While this film is flawed by its broad brush of emotion and history, it is nevertheless important because it stirs the debate and discussion around the burning question of Luther's life and work.
How can one find and worship a merciful God in the face of overwhelming personal and public challenges? No matter how that question is answered, we now know, because of the debate begun by Luther on the Wittenberg door, that mere ascent to doctrine cannot be an answer.
Rather, a healthy, vigorous and thorough inquiry of faith is the only authentic response. Rick Walters, an attorney and film enthusiast, is a former filmmaker and pastor.

God had other plans. Stan57 Top Contributor: Photography. I am amazed what Luther was able to accomplish. Having grown up in Germany, I think that Luther's initial strict conformity to the rules which is quite strong there contributed to his disdain of the hypocrisy of the church.
This documentary tries to explain what drove him. I am in awe of someone with the willingness and ability to stand up to the church, especially at that time, given it's power.
The re-enactments performed in this video are done well and help take the viewer back to the time. The scholars who explain Luther are quite articulate.
What's there is good, but where's the rest of the story? It kind of glosses over everything between the Diet of Worms and the death of Luther.
What about the Augsburg Confession? But what's there is really good. This documentary, narrated by Liam Neeson, discusses the problems Luther and many others had with the Catholic Church in the 16th Century.
Luther's great attempt to reform the church led the way for modern thought in both religion and secular circles.
I had seen this video on PBS a number of times but never got to see it in its entirety, for one reason or another mainly, because Part I was aired without Part II as a follow-up, or vice versa.
That is why I ordered my own copy, and it's become one of my favorites. It is a riveting story about Martin Luther's life and times, and it tells the story better than any history book could about how the Protestant Reformation began, its spread throughout Europe, and its impact on everyone's life today.
Liked the info, made me want more. Martin luther showed conflicted opinions, which during those times and using the societal methods makes it understandable.
