Ka koolis luges ta kas või selleks, et keegi teda ei tülitaks. Ta nimetas oma lemmikute seas Samuel Beckettit ja Charles Bukowskit ehk kõiki, kelle perekonnanimi hakkab B-tähega.
Samuti pidas ta lugu filosoofiast. Umbes neljateistkümneaastaselt hakkas Kurt luuletusi kirjutama, kuid enda sõnutsi ei võtnud ta seda üldse tõsiselt.
Luule oli enamasti abstraktne ja midagi erilist ta oma loominguga öelda ei tahtnud. Kurt avastas pungi siis, kui ajakiri Creem hakkas kirjutama Sex Pistolsi USA kontsertidest, kuhu aastane poiss ei pääsenud.
Esimesed albumid olid bändidelt Devo ja Oingo Boingo. Tema tuttav Buzz Osborne , ansamblist Melvins lindistas tuntumate punkbändide loomingut, sealhulgas Black Flag , Flipper.
Kurti häiris Led Zeppelini ja Aerosmithi juures nende seksistlik hoiak. Lapsepõlves kuulas ta tihti The Beatlesi , soovis olla John Lennon trummidel.
Sel hetkel mõjutasid teda Led Zeppelin ja suuresti Black Sabbath. Oma esimese elektrikitarri soetas Kurt viieteistaastaselt. Teistel andmetel neljateistkümne aastaselt kingitusena onu Chuckilt koos väikse võimendiga.
