Despite being panned, I had hope that this film might be a fulfilling experience. The main problem with 'Umrao Jaan' is that it insists upon itself.
It tries hard to be taken seriously, ergo, the script seems to be written by an eight grader who has just received a thesaurus and tries to impress his teacher by resorting to complex Lexis where simple words would do.
Fact: J. P Dutta's version had all the makings of a grand tragedy: the ethereal main lead, her ashenly handsome love interest, haunting songs and magnificent sets and costumes.
Furthermore,the length of the film is exhaustive I actually had to get up and move about for a bit in order to shake the cobwebs lining the inside of my cranium.

Also Dutta has shown 'Umrao Jaan' to be a love story gone sour. Having read Rusva's original I can safely say that the broad outlook of the novel was to provide the reader an insight into the life of a courtesan In conclusion, Umrao Jaan may be Aishwarya Rai's most powerful work till date and another feather in Shabana Azmi's cap but it is vaguely reminiscent of 'Memoirs of a Geisha' sans a true sense of tragedy.

I watched this movie a year ago and just jad to have it. All of the actors give wonderful performances, but Rekha steals the show with her excellent dancing skills and bewitching expressions.

The story is a tragedy of Shakespearian proportions, telling of how Umrao is snatched from her parents and sold as a courtesan and how her search for love is thwarted at every turn.
It has music, but the story doesn't stop as the songs and dance are part of Umrao's role as an entertainer to her wealthy clients.
It's something far better than the typical Bollywood crowd-pleaser, but it's much more accessible than, say, Satyajit Ray's arthouse offerings.

Watch what Written by rAjOo gunwanti hotmail. Though 'Umrao Jaan' has been re-brought to screen just last year. Muzaffar Ali's adaptation of Mirza Hadi Ruswa's novel remains the most memorable.
Ali does not exaggerate with lavish set designs and his adaptation is of a rather lower budget. He gracefully shows us Umrao mastering the art of poetry and dance.
The songs are beautiful and poetry is itself a character in Umrao's life, like a traveling companion.
In some of the songs we are shown flashes of old elegant paintings, old fashioned settings and what Lucknow may have looked like.
The performances are subtle except of Khanum Jaan's character. Shaukat Kaifi and Dina Pathak are adequate. Prema Narayan is decent.
However, Umrao Jaan clearly belongs to Rekha. With subtlety and grace she underplays her part. There is no melodrama or unnecessary loudness and this allows us to really feel for Umrao.
We see that Ramdei, who was kidnapped like her but sold to slavery, has now become a happy wife of a Nawab.
We see her friend and fellow dancer Bismillah finding happiness in her life. Finally we see Umrao moving along the path of life: trying to forget the past, trying to find happiness and love or trying to escape from it all.
She manages to independently make a living reciting poetry, ghazals and dancing but though people yearn to hear her sing and watch her dance, they refuse to give her the respect of a 'decent' woman.
As we see Umrao travelling through life trying to find her own place, in the end she returns to that very place now abandoned picking up from where she left as she has no place else to go.
