It came out in when I was but a sniveling milk-fed pumpkin of a child. The original made so little impression on me that I didn't remember much of what it was about.
Merely recall Rooster Cogburn's eye patch. So see the old movie if you want to make a comparison, but I don't know that I'd waste my time on it.

There was nothing I did not love about this movie! I am a huge fan of the Coen brothers films and had never seen this one. Boy was I missing out! I believe this is Jeff Bridges best ever role because he did not act like 'Jeff Bridges'.
It was a masterpiece of style with large doses of humor and some really mungy characters. The acting was the best ever. Some of the scenes had a 'Quentin Tarantino' feel to me which I like.
It was also heartwarming and had good character arch. Best thing I have seen in awhile. Thumbs up for me on this one! I'd forgotten how tough the last 15 minutes were.
My kids age and I cried. Spoiler Warning Below The main character is in a life or death situation and the leading man rides a horse to death to save her life.
It is a tear jerking representation of how hard life could be in the Wild Wild West, but the rider gives everything he can to save this little girl and it is very touching.

Jeff Bridges mumbles with a seemingly authentic mouth of frontier cornmeal throughout, so it helps if you've read the novel or watch the first time with the subtitles on.
I guarantee you will watch this film more than once. The teenage heroine is played age-for-age by Hailee Steinfeld brilliantly.
The script is superb, witty, poignant and evocative of a time lost in the fog of bigger stories. Much of the dialogue is lifted straight from Charles Portis's classic story.
The violence when it occurs is genuinely explosively and short. The DVD has an interesting 'making of' mini-documentary. One person found this helpful.

I was easily influenced when I was younger and honestly, it was a bit of a mistake. I'm kind of glad I did. The film is based on a novel of the same name, written by Charles Portis and released in I was never a fan of the original, John Wayne is an actor I never quite agreed with.
This remake is more my cup of tea and I'll go into that later. The plot for True Grit is pretty basic, so basic in fact that it is kind of a stereotypical western.
A teenage girl Hailee Steinfeld goes out of her way to enlist the help of a U. Marshal to track down the man that killed her father. The film is very easy to follow but it all makes sense and doesn't do anything remotely as daft as some more recent films looking at you Star Wars!
It's a fairly typical western road trip with fun dialogue, beautiful scenery and of course, the obligatory gun battles. I mentioned above that I was never a fan of the original.
I always felt that it was a bit wooden and was a very hard pill to swallow. It lacked the charm of other westerns of their time and really couldn't hold it's own compared to what Clint Eastwood was doing.
I don't mind a good spaghetti western etc but a lot of John Wayne movies just go straight over my head and that was one of them. In my opinion, the Coen film has a considerably more versatile cast.
They do a great job with their roles. They bring a lot of personality to them, even if the thing is a little basic.
I loved the chemistry between Bridges and Steinfeld. The bluray print looks really nice. It has a very crisp and colourful print.
It looks especially nice on my big 50" television. I really enjoyed the visuals of the characters are roaming the wilderness.
Something that is always a treat with this kind of film. There's lots of details, lots of colour and it just looks nice all around.
It is a beautiful film now and I have a feeling it will always be that way. The film apparently isn't very true to the book or the film. But I thought it was very well paced and was really good fun to enjoy.
It was simple, it did what it said on the cover and I really can't fault it for that. I know some John Wayne fans will eat me alive for saying this but I would recommend this over the original.
By all means, check that film out and hopefully enjoy it. But this film will always be the better movie on technicalities alone in my mind.

Jeff bridges is as reliable as ever as are Matt Damon and Josh Brolin both of whome are wasted in such small roles.
The standout performance is by Hailee Stienfeld who shines in every scene. Me and a friend both disliked the ending and thought it seemed a bit disjointed from the rest of the film.
In short it is a very good film with an Actress worth keeping your eyes on but not quite as good as the original.

The Man With the Golden Gun. Growing up John Wayne was my absolute favorite film star and I still love his movies, but the remake of True Grif is one terrific movie! I can't support a man who voted and pushes for our guns to be taken away. Matt Damon has publicly stated that Americans need their guns taken away by force.
Look it up. So he pushes for this and yet he makes a huge income off of using guns in his movies. What a joke.
I love, love, love True Grit. It's beautifully made -- great lighting, cinematography -- and the dialog is hilariously witty and delivered so dry pan that it's made even more delightful.

Jeff Bridges makes an amazing Rooster Cogburn -- I was afraid he would just be Bad Blake in the West but not so; I did not realize immediately that LeBoeuf is portrayed by Matt Damon -- it's a Matt Damon I've never seen before, and has there ever been a funnier pretentious braggart of a Texas Ranger?
Along the way, our little group also runs into the likes of Josh Brolin as Tom Chaney, the object of the search because he killed Mattie's father and she will not be deterred from her quest to see him punished; and Barry Pepper as Lucky Ned Pepper.
I love the characters' precise way of speaking, their beautiful diction -- an interesting touch I don't believe I've ever seen in a western.

Mattie Ross is so tenacious that were she to grow up and become a lawyer, I would want her to defend me if I got myself into trouble, or I would want her to prosecute if someone wronged me.
I particularly enjoy the sequence when she negotiates with Colonel Stonehill to be paid for her father's stolen horse, to get the money back for the mustangs her father purchased from Stonehill, and then gets one of the mustangs back to ride herself.
