I love Melissa McCarthy - but this is not one of her good movies - I didn't even laugh once. I was expecting a great hybrid comedy like Who Framed Roger Rabbit or an adult puppet comedy like Team America, but sadly this one pretty much fails in every category.
As soon as the first few puppet "shock scenes" are over, everything becomes dull and unfunny. Rent this, don't buy it like I did. See all reviews.

But our main protagonist is a puppet and its a mark of a good flick that very soon the fact that hes a puppet doesn't matter and isn't noticable beyond membership of any other ethnic group.
If you like South Park, you'll like this. It's like Ted, but crude. Funnier than Sausage Party! My partner hates puppetry but loved this.
I've been looking forward to this because I enjoy the idea of fabricated people See Greg the Bunny , but this is one of the better movies I've seen in a while.
Even if you took out the puppet aspect of it, the writing and story are solid: it's a well constructed murder mystery with a solid twist, action, meaningful character relationships, and I didn't even mind the bits that were told out of order because it was important to drip feed the information the way they did to give the viewer the expected experience.
I'm actually reminded of Stoker in that regard. The worst parts were the overly puppet scenes barely and the Melissa Mcarthy "classic" big girl bumble stuff.

When you make the realization that the Henson kids made this movie, it then feels like this was made in angst of the sale of the Henson properties to Disney.
Disney even sued for this movie not to be released based on the tagline. No seasame, all street, that's all you need to know!!!!! It shouldn't work and I shouldn't have enjoyed it but it does and I did.
I'm not going to say it's perfect or a masterwork but it is actually entertaining if you're cool with some raunch and remember the muppets of yore.
I can feel the Henson in it and it is magic. The whole movie could have honestly been even better without the humans I think.
