Wish we'd known that the language used is the constant F- word. I guess the writers can't come up with decent dialogue and throw cursing in to cover it up.
We never did get into the story very far. I mean really, do detectives use such language constantly to express themselves.
Will remember that when perusing any series that's done by HBO. I promptly gave up about halfway through something I almost never do because I was finding it boring.
I am no stranger to slow moving shows, and am often quite a big fan of police dramas that extend one case over a whole season.
But over the next few years, as more seasons were released, I heard so much praise for the show and how amazing it was. So many people LOVE this show, and are so passionate about it, that when I saw season one on amazon for cheap I thought I might as well give it another try.
Well, I did. Both of the main characters, as well as many others, are pretty unlikable, making it hard to care about them or their lives.
Characters would withhold information from each other and be uncooperative for unexplained reasons, seemingly to extend the story or make the atmosphere more moody and creepy.
It seemed like many things were included purely for the sake of being shocking or creating conflict instead of for the benefit of the story, and did not seem realistic or believable.
I know that many people really love this show. I will acknowledge that the cinematography was very nice, this was clearly a high budget series and the landscape shots especially always looked beautiful.
The show itself was great. Really enjoyed it. Super tense, and kept you interested. Ended up watching it over just a few nights. End was a bit of a let down, so just keep that in mind.
Watched the Blu-Ray. I prefer UV, so this was an annoyance for me. Something to do with HBO. It also has an iTunes version, which did work.
But since I don't have Apple product, this is useless for me. I put it on my wife's account just to test it.
Waited for it to come down in price. Good value at this price. Truly one of the greatest TV shows I've ever watched. Deep, dark and mesmerizing.
Reminiscent of the film Se7en I find. Only reason I rated 5 stars is because when I received the package very quickly I might add, I noticed disc 1 and 3 had small cracks or imperfections on the brims.
Nothing I haven't seen before on a brand new bluray. But my PS3 couldn't read the 1st disc not sure about the 3rd yet, it would just sit at the loading screen.
I tried it on my laptop's bluray player and it works fine however. Amazon, however, as always was very courteous and prompt with their return policy.
Thanks to HBO for a a show for the ages and thanks to Amazon for their upstanding services. One of my favourite tv shows of all time.
The cast is amazing and the story is just as good! My only complaint is that the actual box for the boy-rays came looking like it was dropped down a set of stairs.

Extremely happy to have this season on blu-ray. Dark and increasingly engrossing, this series is one of my top five all time favourites. The story is told from two different time periods about detectives hunting for the solution to disturbing murders.
More interesting than the very good plot is the way in which it is told, unwinding in two time periods, from the perspectives of two very different men that despite having fallen out after a betrayal and gone on divergent paths, still have shreds of loyalty for each other and still want to make sure the crimes are solved.
They tell both the the story of the murders, but also that of their changing relationship and characters - layer by layer.
Best of all is this acting - every actor that even crosses the screen is believable - but Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey deliver their best performances.
Every scene is brilliant. Highly recommended for those who are able to watch disturbing scenes - both violent and depressing at times - it is ultimately rewarding.
A unique experience. It was well written and directed. Perhaps too much so. I don't think it would have done as well as a stand alone show on the big 3 networks.

McConaughey and Harrelson play two local detectives who are being interviewed by State Police, in the present time, about their roles in the past during which their job was to track down the killer of a prostitute who had been ritually tortured and murdered.
It's hinted at that the interviews are to cover gaps in the procedural or that there is the possibility of the killer reemerging again or even that one of the detectives may have been guilty of the crime himselfwe, the audience, are not totally sure until the episodes move along and more of the original investigation is revealed.
That investigation is shown in depth in flashback together with detailed information about the two detectives,their life-styles, their strengths and weaknesses and their failures and successes during the search for the killer.
Knowing this set-up of the style of the series does help in following what is happening as the episodes progress. I found it complicated as sometimes happens when a story is told in flashback and continually interchanges with the present.
For me it was worth sticking with True Detective as the finale was stunning and rewarding, and well worth the heaps of awards that this 1st season received.
It is set in Louisiana. There is a sense of evil lurking in every corner. The atmosphere is filled with toxic exhalations of danger. There is a 'heart of darkness' feeling as they penetrate the swamp in search of the answer to unspeakable crimes against the innocent.
In fact, 'searching' is the overwhelming theme. Sometimes it results in moments of spectacular enlightenment.
Sometimes dead ends result in heartbreaking disappointment. But always there is the searching for an evil that must be dealt with and destroyed.
Sometimes the searchers themselves become the prey on the brink of extinction. No one is safe. Nothing is sacrosanct. This is a masterpiece permeated with an almost metaphysical sense of menace.

I admit I'm stunned at what good storytelling this is, what utterly original, down to the last little tic in one's hand or facial muscle, these two lead characters are.
I expect this good from McConaughey, and will watch for and expect as good from Harrelson in future. This may have been the best thing made to air in Each "season" of this series is a new crime, a new teaming of detectves.
I'm watching Season 2 as it unfolds. Don't sneer at Colin Farrel until you've seen his law man here. That includes both the violence and the language that tend to make me twitch, though others seem not to be affected.
Just view it. I suspect you'll like it enough to collect it. This is not my genre, exactly, but it is SO good! Very engaging throughout, but falls down in the final episode.
The "big reveal" is disappointing, and the last few minutes were laughable. I would give it four and half stars if I could, but I just can't bring myself to assign it the perfection signified by 5 stars.

The Louisiana settings are moody and atmospheric, both in the countryside which is semitropical and isolated, and the small towns which look like dead relics of the near past.
The corruption of the landscape mirrors the corruption that is taking place behind the scenes of normative life which most people believe constitutes their reality.
A ritual killing with overtones of paganism [voodun and Celtic] sets two detectives on a seventeen year trajectory which will profoundly alter their lives and shake them to the core of their being.
Martin Hart [ Harrelson] is the sort of well liked, affable family man who is grounded in tradition and community, and yet manages to jeopardize everything he values with his penchant for womanizing.
Rustin Cohle [ McConaughy ] is a nihilist, divorced from human contact, who finds existence utterly devoid of meaning and believes in nothing. And yet he manages to expound on the human condition so poetically that one immediately suspects he has suffered a great wound.
Both characters are beautifully developed and each has something profoundly different lurking below the surface of the face they present to themselves and the world, which will come to expression in the course of the series.
I see some reviewers have criticized the end of the story, but I found it to be spiritually profound and deeply redemptive. I can't say enough good things about the series without spoiling it, but I couldn't stop watching and went through the episodes in two days.

It's hinted at that the interviews are to cover gaps in the procedural or that there is the possibility of the killer reemerging again or even that one of the detectives may have been guilty of the crime himselfwe, the audience, are not totally sure until the episodes move along and more of the original investigation is revealed.
That investigation is shown in depth in flashback together with detailed information about the two detectives,their life-styles, their strengths and weaknesses and their failures and successes during the search for the killer.
Knowing this set-up of the style of the series does help in following what is happening as the episodes progress.
I found it complicated as sometimes happens when a story is told in flashback and continually interchanges with the present.
For me it was worth sticking with True Detective as the finale was stunning and rewarding, and well worth the heaps of awards that this 1st season received.
It is set in Louisiana. I won't review the series, if you're reading this you probably know it's excellent and well worth a watch.
I bought this DVD set as a gift and it was well worth the money. The series is so intriguing that it will probably be rewatched several times.
The presentation box is very ornate and looks lovely on the shelf and the quality of playback and features make it well worth the money.

Brilliant dialog. Brilliant acting. One of the most stylish series I've ever seen. Just sorry it ended just as I got hooked.
